The paper presents the results of the first comprehensive studies of the geological and geochemical features of bauxite formation in the crust of the weathering rocks of the Proterozoic Kursk series within the Shemraevsky deposit of rich iron ores. The use of a complex of modern methods (X-ray phase analysis, X-ray fluorescence analysis, ICP-MS mass spectrometry, petrographic and mineralogical studies) made it possible to establish that bauxite formation occurred in phyllite shales under conditions of moderate lateritization, accompanied by intensive removal of silica. A comparative analysis of geochemical data and the construction of discriminatory diagrams revealed the multi-stage nature of the bauxite formation process. The accumulation of alumina was carried out in situ, due to the high permeability of the transformed rocks of the Kursk series and the effects of meteoric waters. An inverse correlation has been established between the content of clay minerals and the intensity of lateritization, which indicates their formation at various time stages. The revealed manifestation is classified as a ferriallite weathering crust. The discovery of bauxite-bearing manifestations in this part of the Kursk Magnetic anomaly (KMA) indicates a high potential for the identification of new bauxite deposits in the south of the KMA.
